This article will guide you step by step to choose your essential oils diffuser.

Using an essential oil diffuser is the fastest and most effective way to enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy will bring you an undeniable natural well-being on a daily basis. You can clean the air and get rid of viruses and bacteria. But also boost your immune system or spread a pleasant scent at home or in the office.

Choosing a diffuser of essential oils can be a real challenge if you are completely new to the field of aromatherapy. That's why I'm going to guide you step by step in choosing your diffuser.

Just before you start, please note that a nebulization diffuser can also be called a "nebulizer" or a "nebulizer". For a brumisation diffuser, it can also be called "mist" or "ultrasonic diffuser."

You will find in this article the different price ranges, so that you have a clear and global vision. This will be followed by a short summary of the diffusers to choose from according to the objective you have: do you want to treat yourself with essential oils or only enjoy their aromas? I will also mention the nomadic diffuser, which are a new way of taking advantage of essential oils, and finally end with the full and detailed description of the modes of dissemination.

Choose a diffuser based on the diffusion surface

Depending on the size of the room where you want to diffuse, different diffusers and technologies are to be preferred. For a room less than 20m2, nomadic diffusers such as Bulia or soft heat diffusers such as square Stonélia are enough. As soon as you exceed 20m2, then you have different choices. Ultrasonic diffusers are generally recommended for parts of this area, although nebulization diffusers, too, are appropriate: it is enough to diffuse less in the room. For pieces of 60m2 and above, nebulization diffusers are highly suitable in order to effectively enjoy the fragrances of essential oils and their benefits. As for the new ultra-nebulization technology, it is a real Swiss knife: nomadic diffusers, just adjust the number of spray, depending on the size of the space in which you diffusion.

Choose a mobile or non-nomadic diffuser

Today, as we travel constantly, whether by car, trip or even at the office, perhaps you need to enjoy essential oils outside your home? That's why we offer diffusers of nomadic essential oils. Lilia, for example, is a real tool for aromatherapy, which works on rechargeable battery. The Bulia, on the other hand, is a more affordable model that works on USB port.

The adapters are provided with the diffusers.

Diffuser technologies

We are now getting to the bottom of the issue: diffusion technology. For the most interested among you, perhaps you want to know how different modes of dissemination work, their unique characteristics and their commonalities.

First of all, you should know that there are 5 types of essential oil diffusers:

Ultra-nebulization diffusers

How does ultra-nebulization work?

Ultra-nebulization is actually a diffusion mode similar to ultrasonic diffusion but without the addition of water. A lozenge vibrates very quickly to propagate micro droplets into the air. Thus, the particles of essential oils remain suspended in the air longer, unlike the oils of ultrasonic diffusers that are very heavily diluted in water.

Lilia, diffuseur par ultra-nébulisation

The benefits of ultra-nebulization

This method of diffusion allows its essential oils to be diffused cold, directly from the bottle. The use of these diffusers is therefore greatly facilitated, and there are no problems related to maintenance and glassware. Ultra-nebulizers offer the benefit of enjoying the virtues of aromatherapy and the olfactory atmosphere produced by the fragrances of essential oils. Many of them are nomadic, such as Lilia or Bulia: you can enjoy aromatherapy in all circumstances.

Features of ultra-nebulizers

Ultra-nebulization diffusers are silent. Because of the high diffusion power, one can think that this type of diffuser consumes a lot of essential oils. However, these diffusers work with pure essential oils, so they do not require continuous use. In addition, our diffuser offer diffusing systems that are adjustable and timed to your needs.

Nebulized essential oils

How do nebulizers work?

Thanks to a sophisticated mechanism, this type of diffuser will nebulize millions of essential oil molecules in the air thanks to a pump used in the medical sector.

A strong flow of air will generate the suction of the essential oils which will then be thrown in fine droplets against the glass wall. The heaviest droplets will fall back and be recycled. The thinnest droplets will escape from the top of the glassware and spread into the air.

ONA diffuseur par nébulisation

Why choose a diffuser of essential oils by nebulization?

All aromatherapists will tell you, the diffusers of essential oils by nebulization present the best solution to enjoy the benefits of essential oils in diffusion.

The cold nebulization process does not alter the properties of essential oils and thus preserves all their aromas and therapeutic benefits.

In addition, the Venturi technology built into nebulizers makes scattering incredibly effective: it only takes a few drops of essential oils and a few minutes for the micro droplets to be propagated in the air of your room.

Because of their efficiency, nebulization diffusers are suitable for all rooms up to 100m2.

Finally, these diffusers come in many shapes and sizes, many of which are made with natural materials such as glass, wood or bamboo. These beautiful essential oil diffusers are easy to incorporate into the decoration of your home.

Special features of diffusers by nebulization

Are the nebulizers noisy?

Nebulization diffusers emit vibrations from the pump that propels the air. This generates a slight sound that you can barely hear if you are away from your diffuser.

On the other hand, not all nebulizers are equal on this point.

Our high-end nebulization diffusers are known for being really discreet.

This slight noise does not represent at all a brake to take advantage of the quality of diffusion of the nebulizers, especially since the duration of an optimal diffusion is about ten minutes.

There is a little trick to reduce or even eliminate this noise: do not put your nebulizer on a hard surface like a wooden or metal table. Instead, use a soft, thick piece of fabric under your nebulizer.

Do nebulizers consume a lot of essential oils?

Many novice people believe that a nebulization diffuser consumes more essential oils than a sprayer.

People think that a nebulizer works as a mist that requires a long diffusion time because of the dilution of essential oil in water. In contrast, a nebulization diffusion does not require water and lasts only about ten minutes.

There are also nebulizers with a timer that makes diffusing almost autonomous. The diffuser runs for 15 minutes after it stops for 30 minutes. This cycle is repeated 3 times and then automatically stops.

This intermittent diffusion will save your oil bottles in the long run because you will be diffusing for a very short period of time, and will offer you the best results in aromatherapy because the proposed periods of time are intelligently thought out.

Are nebulizers difficult to clean?

Many people think that an essential oil nebulizer requires a lot of maintenance and cleaning.

False.

If you use your nebulizer daily, you will almost never need to clean it.

The only time a cleanup is necessary is when you're not going to use your diffuser for a long time. This cleaning will prevent the oil from drying in the diffuser and therefore clogging the pump.

You're probably wondering how you can clean your nebulizer... Well, it's simple:

Empty your glassware completely (don't let a few drops of essential oils stay at the bottom)

Pour 10 drops of our specially designed nebulizer cleaner.

Diffuse for 5 minutes.

Put the rest of the cleaner back into the bottle. (You can reuse it for a future cleanup)

It's over, your diffuser is ready for a new use.

Even after several cleanings, your nebulizer will diffuse as well as before without any degradation of its effectiveness.

Essential oils diffuser by brumisation (or ultrasonic)

How does it work?

This type of diffuser has an inside a lozenge that vibrates at very high frequency. These vibrations generate a slight mist from the water in the tank of the mist. Essential oils are added to water in small amounts. The mist that contains the essential oils then diffuses into the air.

Elia, diffuseur ultrasonique

Why choose a mister?

The price of ultrasonic diffusers (mist) is a strong selling point. They present a good starting choice if you don't have a large budget and want to learn about the world of diffusing without breaking the bank. Once this milestone has passed, you will be very tempted to take it to the next level of diffusing and opt for a nebulizer.

The majority of ultrasonic diffusers are made of plastic. This can be a good thing, or a bad thing depending on your needs. If you have children at home, you don't run the risk of your diffuser being broken, unlike nebulizers that are often fragile and require a lot of caution.

The misters are known to be silent. This can be perfect if you want to sleep by spreading an essential oil promoting sleep.

Finally, this type of scattering creates a pleasant mist with a nice visual effect that will amaze the whole family.

Can we use the sprays in aromatherapy?

Because of the dilution of essential oils in water, the beneficial effects of essential oils are not as pronounced as with nebulization diffusers that do not use water. This may limit the use of this type of diffusers in aromatherapy.

Instead, the sprays are used to create an olfactory atmosphere that increases as the diffusion progresses.

Can the air be moistened with a mist?

Buying an essential oil sprayer to moisten the air in your home is a bad idea.

I explain why: To increase the humidity percentage of a room by 20m2, you need an average of 20 litres of water. You quickly realize that a simple essential oil sprayer with a 200ml tank of water can't change the humidity of a room.

So if you really want to moisten your home, buy a REAL humidifier with a multi-litre tank.

Are essential oil misters really effective?

The misters are less effective compared to nebulizers. What for? Because the micro droplets contained in the mist are composed of water and a small amount of essential oils. This mixture is heavy and the micro droplets cannot spread so easily as the micro droplets produced by a nebulizer.

That's why we recommend this type of diffuser for small rooms not exceeding 30m2.

Should an essential oil spray be cleaned?

A mister requires more maintenance to keep it for a long time. Regular cleaning (every 3 days) is necessary to prevent the limestone from depositing on the ultrasonic lozenge, greatly reducing its effectiveness.

To clean your heater, you empty it completely of water. Using a cotton rod and vinegar, you clean the metal circle at the bottom of the water tank.

Breakdown essential oils

How does fan diffusion work?

The way a ventilation diffuser works is basic: a fan blows air through a cellulose pellet that contains drops of essential oils. This causes these oils to evaporate into the air.

The lightest molecules take off at the beginning of diffusion (lemongrass for example), while the heaviest molecules (e.g. ylang ylang) remain on the pellet for a long time before evaporating.

Ventilia, diffuseur par ventilation

Why choose a ventilation diffuser?

The diffusion by ventilation is done cold, which preserves the properties of essential oils.

This type of diffuser is almost silent, you can hardly hear the soft sound of the fan turning.

Ventilation diffusers are effective at spreading essential oils in medium-sized rooms of up to 40m2.

Finally, a ventilation diffuser requires little maintenance thanks to its replacement pellet system.

You can reserve each lozenge for an essential oil. When you want to spread a specific essential oil, just choose the right lozenge.

This system represents a real advantage over other types of diffusers that need to be cleaned every time a different essential oil is used.

These spare pellets, also known as "blotters or tampons", last on average 6 months, for daily use.

Can ventilation diffusers be used in aromatherapy?

Ventilation scattering is quite special: not all essential oils are released into the air at once. This means that instead of spreading the entire essential oil all of a sudden, you get a portion of light molecules (the top notes) at the beginning of the diffusion and another part of heavy molecules (heart notes) towards the end of the diffusion.

This process was invented in collaboration with doctors in hospitals. Although diffusion is less potent than nebulization diffusion, it is more discreet and enhances the fragrances of essential oils.

The diffusion by ventilation becomes interesting to create a purely olfactory atmosphere:

The head notes will spread quickly and disappear after a few minutes of diffusion.

Heart notes (medium volatility molecules) will take over to maintain the freshness of the top notes and announce the warmth of the background notes.

Finally, the background notes slowly settle in the air to stay there for a long time.

Soft heat essential oils

How does soft heat diffusion work?

Like ventilation diffusion, the principle of simple heat diffusion: the diffuser has a regulated resistance that keeps the temperature at about 45 degrees.

This resistance gently heats the ceramic surface on which the essential oils are placed. At a certain temperature, the oil will begin to evaporate into the air.

Stonelia square, diffuseur par chaleur douce

Why choose a soft-heat diffuser?

Scattering soft heat is a simple and inexpensive way to diffuse your essential oils.

It is particularly suitable for small rooms of up to 20m2. This can be interesting if you want to spread your essential oils locally (such as in the living room for example).

In addition, this diffusion mode does NOT MAKE ANY noise, which makes it ideal for a night diffusion to sleep better.

You can be even more creative and use a soft heat diffuser (Stonelia for example) to heat your massage oils before applying it to your body.

Finally, soft heat diffusers are generally robust and have a long lifespan.

Features of this mode of distribution

Does soft heat diffusion damage the chemical properties of essential oils?

We can see here or there written that the diffusion beyond 40 degrees is harmful to the virtues of essential oils, which is not true: essential oils have already been distilled around 100 degrees. They do not lose their properties and scattering at a temperature of up to about 50 degrees is no problem.

Our soft-heat diffusers incorporate resistance that gently heats essential oils and regulates to a maximum temperature of 45 degrees. So there's no risk if you decide to buy one of our soft-heat diffusers.

These diffusers are highly prized by hospitals for their particularity: they do not use water either. It is precisely this liquid that is best not introduced into hospitals for health and disease transmission causes.

What security measures should be taken during the diffusion?

If you have children at home, make sure they are away from the diffuser to avoid contact with the ceramic surface, which can be burning.

So if you came up with the idea of installing a soft heat diffuser in a children's room, now you know you shouldn't do it.
